From fear to freedom: My journey through solo travel

From fear to freedom: My journey through solo travel

Travelling solo requires stepping out of one’s comfort zone and confronting various fears…Each successful solo trip builds confidence and reaffirms one’s capabilities. This newfound confidence often transcends travel and positively impacts other areas of life.

Anandmai Kumar

Let me start by telling you the story of a girl who came from a small town in Bihar (an eastern state in India). Naive and scared of how the world would be, she ventured forth.

Though her family was supportive of her studies and allowed her to travel during her school and college years, the only condition was to travel either with a group or family. Solo travel was not allowed. She did travel to a few places during her school and college days, which gave her a little exposure to the world, but most of her thoughts were influenced by the movies and stories she saw or read.

To her, the world was as she was: sweet, caring, loving, and everything nice. But when is the world ever the same as you? She kept falling into the chaos of the world and ended up hurt. As time passed, her confidence in herself and the world shattered. She felt trapped, homesick for a place she never knew, uncertain if that place even existed. She was merely spending her life, not living it.

From falling for the wrong person to getting married and then divorced, her life became a roller-coaster that often took a trip to hell. Until one day, she decided to take a trip to Ranikhet (a hill station in Uttarakhand) with a group of strangers. She ended up in a 100-year-old house that she had seen in her dreams.

Something shifted in her spiritually on that trip, and her life changed for the better. She started taking solo trips to the mountains and places she liked. These trips not only restored her confidence but also helped her recognise her strengths and shortcomings. She discovered many things about herself that she had been unaware of until then. Her search for a home came to a stop, and her soul found peace.

There are still many trips to come and many lessons to be learned. But she is going to share the dos and don’ts, as well as the benefits, of solo travelling.

Hello readers, I am Anandmai, and this is my story.

Safety first while travelling alone

Research your destination: Understand local customs, and culture, and identify safe and unsafe areas.

Share your itinerary: Keep a trusted friend or family member informed about your travel plans and update them regularly.

Emergency preparedness: Carry a basic first aid kit and have emergency contact numbers easily accessible.

Stay aware: Be mindful of your surroundings and avoid risky areas, especially after dark.

Trust your instincts: If something feels off, seek help or remove yourself from the situation.

Use reliable transportation: Opt for trusted transportation services and avoid unregistered vehicles.

Stay connected: Keep your phone charged and ensure you have access to local SIM cards or Wi-Fi for communication.

Now that we have established ground rules, let us hop on to the benefits of solo travelling.

Overcoming fear and building confidence

Travelling solo requires stepping out of one’s comfort zone and confronting various fears, whether they pertain to safety, loneliness, or unfamiliarity with new environments. Each successful solo trip builds confidence and reaffirms one’s capabilities. This newfound confidence often transcends travel and positively impacts other areas of life.

Step out of comfort zone: Embrace the discomfort as a catalyst for personal growth.

Start small: Begin with familiar destinations or short trips to gain confidence.

Plan and prepare: Thorough research and meticulous planning alleviate anxiety about the unknown.

Learn from challenges: View setbacks as learning opportunities that enhance resilience.

Celebrate achievements: Acknowledge and appreciate milestones, no matter how small.

Reflect and adapt: Regularly assess experiences to refine future solo travel strategies.

Decision-making skills

When travelling alone, every decision, from the itinerary to daily activities, rests solely on the traveller. This responsibility enhances decision-making skills, fostering a sense of autonomy and self-assuredness. Women who travel solo learn to trust their instincts and judgments, which can be incredibly empowering.

Autonomy and responsibility: Embrace the freedom and accountability that come with making decisions independently.

Risk assessment: Learn to assess risks effectively and make informed choices to ensure safety and enjoyment.

Adaptability: Cultivate flexibility to adjust plans based on changing circumstances or new opportunities.

Problem-solving: Approach challenges as opportunities to develop creative solutions and resilience.

Cultural immersion and broadening perspectives

Solo travel provides unparalleled opportunities for cultural immersion. Without the distractions of a companion, solo travellers can learn about the culture without the stereotypes and prejudices that come with it.

Be open and approachable: Maintain an open and friendly demeanour. Smile, initiate conversations, and show genuine interest in others. Being approachable can lead to spontaneous and meaningful interactions, helping to break down barriers and build a sense of community among travellers.

Genuine connections: Travelling alone often leads to more meaningful interactions with locals and fellow travellers. These connections can offer new perspectives, broaden understanding, and foster empathy. For women, these interactions can be particularly enlightening, breaking down stereotypes and promoting a more inclusive worldview.

Learning and growth: Immersing oneself in different cultures fosters learning and personal growth. Experiencing diverse ways of life challenges preconceived notions and encourages open-mindedness. This exposure to new ideas and practices can be spiritually enriching, leading to a deeper understanding of the world and one’s place in it.

Self-discovery and inner peace: Solo travel provides the solitude necessary for introspection and self-discovery. Away from the distractions of daily life, travellers can connect with their inner selves on a deeper level.

Spiritual growth and enlightenment: Beyond personal and cultural benefits, solo travel can be a deeply spiritual journey. The combination of experiencing new environments, reflecting on oneself, and connecting with others can lead to spiritual growth and enlightenment.

Practical tips for women travelling solo

While the benefits of solo travel are abundant, it’s essential to approach it with careful planning and awareness, especially for women. Here are some practical tips to ensure a safe and fulfilling solo travel experience.

Research and plan: Researching about the culture, customs, and safety considerations of the destination can help avoid potential issues. Planning an itinerary while leaving room for spontaneity ensures a balanced and enjoyable trip.

Stay connected: Staying connected with friends and family back home provides an added layer of safety and reassurance. Regular check-ins and sharing travel plans can help keep loved ones informed and ease any concerns.

Trust your instincts: Trusting one’s instincts is vital. If a situation feels uncomfortable or unsafe, it’s important to listen to that inner voice and take appropriate action. Women should feel empowered to prioritise their safety and well-being.

Pack wisely: Packing light and smart can make solo travel more manageable. Essentials such as a first-aid kit, portable charger, and copies of important documents can be lifesavers in unexpected situations.

Embrace solo time: Embracing solitude and using it as an opportunity for self-discovery and reflection can enhance the solo travel experience. Engaging in activities like journaling, meditation, or simply enjoying the surroundings can be spiritually rewarding.

Overcoming the challenges of solo travel: While the rewards of solo travel are immense, it is not without its challenges. However, these challenges, when approached with a positive mindset and practical strategies, can become growth opportunities.

Dealing with loneliness: Loneliness is a common concern for solo travellers. However, it can also be a valuable opportunity to enjoy one’s own company and develop a deeper connection with oneself. Engaging in local activities, joining group tours, or staying in social accommodations like hostels can help mitigate feelings of isolation.

Ensuring personal safety: Safety is a paramount concern, especially for women travelling alone. Taking precautions such as avoiding poorly lit areas, keeping valuables secure, and staying aware of one’s surroundings can greatly enhance safety. Additionally, learning basic self-defence techniques and having a personal safety plan can provide peace of mind.

Navigating language barriers: Language barriers can pose a challenge but also offer a unique learning experience. Learning a few key phrases in the local language, using translation apps, and maintaining a friendly and patient attitude can go a long way.

So, when are you planning your next solo trip?
